Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to summarise physics of exotic atoms, to list current open questions and to describe methods in experimental and theoretical physics to test exotic atoms.

Subject of course

Atomic physics of exotic atoms - from the hydrogen atom to the exotic atom. Production of exotic atoms at particle accelerators. Muonic atoms for the investigation of exotic atomic as well as molecular physics and weak interaction. Hadronic atoms - especially pionic and kaonic hydrogen atoms - in theory and experiment. Introduction into recent theoretical access to low-energy QCD, especially quantum field theoretical description and chiral perturbation theory. Precision measurements of observables due to strong interaction in exotic atoms. Extraction of meson-nucleon scattering lengths. Experimental study of chiral symmetry breaking. Experiments with antimatter atoms.

Teaching methods

Lecture where digital media is used to explain physics of exotic atoms and visualise experiments..
