Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand and apply the fundamental concepts in quantum information science. Specifically, the students will acquire the necessary theoretical skills for

 

(1) formally describing quantum information systems,

(2) identifying, characterising and applying entanglement in quantum technologies, 

(3) mastering the paradigmatic protocols for quantum communication, quantum computation and quantum cryptography, and

(4) implementing simple quantum circuits on a real quantum computer (IBMq)

  • Introductory lecture to quantum information

  • Axioms of quantum mechanics

  • The qubit and Bloch sphere

  • Density matrix and purifications

  • State discrimination


  • Schmidt decomposition

  • Entanglement and its detection

  • Entanglement distillation

  • No cloning, teleportation and dense coding

  • Quantum cryptography - BB84 and entanglement-based

  • Quantum circuits and the Fourier transform

  • Computational complexity

  • Deutsch, Grover and Shor algorithms
