Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to better understand the present directions in high-energy physics and to carry out their own research within the framework of a diploma or Ph.D. thesis.

This course is an introduction to the areas of particle physics that are currently being investigated at the LHC (in particular, the Higgs model and supersymmetry) both from the point of view of the theory and of the experimental techniques used.

Subject of course

Overview of the Standard Model, particle detectors in general and at the LHC, chiral structure of Weak Interactions, Higgs model, discovery of the Higgs particle and further measurements, motivation of Beyond-the-Standard-Model physics ("BSM") and in particular supersymmetry, search for supersymmetry and "New Physics" at the LHC.
