Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to

  • describe basic physics of diagnostic x-ray procedures
  • explain x-ray detection and detector technologies
  • describe the basics of medical image processing, advantages and disadvantages of common algorithms as well as processing artefacts
  • apply and interprete the concept of detective quantum efficiency (DQE) and modulation transfer function (MTF)
  • define and use generator ond detector settings of x-ray facilities to the extent of using x-ray equipment for a thesis, e.g.

Subject of course

  • Principles of medical imaging physics and instrumentation, x-ray imaging physics
  • Production and characteristics of x-ray radiation used in medical diagnostic imaging, x-ray interactions
  • Detector technologies and detector physics, mathematical description of detector and resulting image properties
  • Principles of diagnostic x-ray dosimetry

Examination modalities

Written exam in TUWEL/Zoom followed by oral part discussing answers given in the written part. Both parts held in one exam session. Written part can be completed beforehand in TUWEL during the lecture periode if desired.
