Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to realize the formation and further growth of the crystalline solid from fluid phases, to describe the microscopic theories and models of crystal growth, to categorize the methods of manufacturing single crystals, thin films and nanostructures, and to describe manufacturing technologies of some industrially important materials.

Subject of course

Crystalline state. Single- and polycrystalline solids. Crystallization as phase transition. Nucleation process and critical nucleus concept. Microscopic theory of crystal growth. Growth mechanisms. Growth morphology. Principles of segregation. Crystal growth techniques. Characterization of crystals. Crystal quality and crystal defects. Growth-defects-properties relation. Crystal growth of selected functional materials. Thin film growth technology: applications of films in science and technology. Film deposition techniques. Nanotechnology.
