Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to comprehend the materials presented in the lecture and to draw conclusions from them, as well as to actively communicate the contents presented during the lecture.

Subject of course

General: The lecture focuses on the theoretical aspects of physical and chemical deposition techniques. Nonetheless the connection to the practical application of thin folms and coatings is emphasized. Methods of thin film characterization are thoroughly discussed. In addition the physical properties of thin filma, which may often deviate strongly from the bulk material will be elucidated. Timetable: Theory and computer simulation of thin film formation and growth; process control and thin film characterization; physical properties of thin films. In addition to this lectue a 1 2 hour technical short course "Physics of thin films" can be taken during the winter or the summer term. Within this course the student can perform experiments with different physical deposition and thin film characterization methods.
