Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to explain fundamental experiments and theoretical foundations of quantum mechanics. Students are proficient in Dirac's formalism, basic operator algebra and are able to solve simple single-particle problems (e.g. free particle, harmonic oscillator, hydrogen atom) employing various mathematical techniques. Furthermore students understand basic principles of the quantum mechanical description of physical variables (e.g. angular momentum, spin).

Subject of course

Foundations of quantum mechanics: fundamental experiments, Schrödinger equation, wave mechanics, Dirac formalism, eigenvalue problems, scattering theory, angular momentum and spin, harmonic oscillator, measurement processes in quantum theory, hydrogen atom, perturbation theory.

Teaching methods

Involving students in the lecture by asking questions and tutorials for solving problems independently.

First meeting: Tuesday, 05.10.2021 at 08:00.  In this first meeting all details regarding the implementation of this course will be discussed.

The cohorts are as following: "even groups in the lecture hall in even weeks, odd ones in odd weeks. The hybrid starts with the second lecture Wedn, Oct. 6th, which is week 40, i.e., even. The first lecture Oct. 5th is zoom only, link see above. The zoom link is also valid if you are in the online week.

We are aware that these times are not at all student friendly. Hence, 90% attendance of the lectures will be rewarded with a quantum T-shirt. Attendance of the exercises is obligatory, except for the online exercises. 

 

To guarantee a uniform distribution of students of the respective online-week of the hybrid groups onto the online-only groups, the repartitioning is as follows

Examination modalities

Two written exams (80%): 19.11.2021 and 31.1.2022 (from 9:00 to 11:00, pending changes due to the Covid pandemic).

In each exams 40% of the points are needed as a minimum.

An additional test can be used to replace the exam in which the least points have been gained.

Duration of tests: 2 1/2 hours; exam tasks from lectures and tutorials; you are allowed to take with you: pen(s) , 1 DIN A4 page (single side). Student ID.

Tutorium/"Kreuzerlübung" (20%):

The prepared exercises need to be (a) indicated in TUWEL and (b) uploaded to TUWEL until midnight the day before the exercise class.
If a student presents one of the exercises at the black board or online in the fully-fledged online cohort, a weighting factor between 0 and 1 is assigned. In all, the Tutorium is evaluated according to the Eq.:

minimum (% of marked exercises, mean weighting factor for the black board presentation)

The Tutorium with the least marked exercises will not be not included ( "Streichresult" for not prepared Tutorium or for missed tutorium in case of illness),

50% of the combined points (tests and tutorium) are needed to pass (grade 4). 62.5% for grade 3, 75% for grade 2, 87.5% for grade 1.

A "script" for the course is available (buying it cannot replace attendening the lectures though). The skriptum can be baought in the secretary's office 8th floor yellow 9:00-10:30am. Lecture notes and presentations (slides) will be made available after each lecture in tuwel or TISS.
