Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to describe the impact of electric and magnetic fields on charged particles, to explain the laws of classical electrodynamics, i.e., Maxwell's equations, and to discuss the relevance of special relativity to particle motion and electromagnetic radiation. Furthermore, students are able to solve problems of special relativity and electrodynamics as well as present their results in front of an audience.

Subject of course

Starting from Electro- and Magentostatics both in vacuum as well as in matter, we develop by taking into account time-dependent electrical as well as magnetical fields via Faraday's Induction law and the Ampere-Maxwell law Maxwell's equations. From the invariance of the propagation-velocity of wave-solutions of Maxwell's equations emerges the Space-Time concept of Special Relativity.

Teaching methods

Blackboard lecture with accompanied tutorials where relevant calculations are presented by students, and a weekly plenary exercise class with calculations presented by a faculty member
