Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to describe optical basics, explain light microscopy and fluorescence microscopy, and discuss various microscopic techniques and the concept of optical resolution. Students can describe single-molecule and super-resolution microscopy and list the latest biological applications.

Subject of course

  • Basics in Optics: the essentials in geometrical optics and wave optics, lenses and lens aberrations
  • Light microscopy: setups, resolution, image formation, contrast
  • Fluorescence microscopy
  • Discussion of state-of-the-art microscopy techniques: confocal microscopy, near-field microscopy, total internal reflection microscopy, ¿
  • Single molecule micoscopy
  • Superresolution microscopy
  • New biological applications
