This course is in at least 1 assigned curriculum part of the STEOP.

2022W, VO, 1.0h, 1.5EC, to be held in blocked form

Properties

  • Semester hours: 1.0
  • Credits: 1.5
  • Type: VO Lecture
  • Format: Presence

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to independently work in a cell culture lab as well as plan and conduct experiments with cells. They have gained theoretical knowledge of the principles and techniques in mammalian cell culture.

Subject of course

  • Cell culture basics (laboratory setup, equipment, aseptic technique, contamination, safety aspects)
  • Commonly used cell lines (adherent and suspension cell lines), primary cell culture
  • Commonly used cell culture media and supplements
  • Basic cell culture techniques (cryopreservation of cells, microscopic evaluation of confluence and morphology, cell counting)
  • Transfection and selection, cell line differentiation, characterization of cells
  • 3D cell culture, spheroids
  • Metabolic activity assays
  • Bioprocessing technologies
