Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to realize and solve electrochemical problems, and they are able to use their newly developed skills to develop new and transformative strategies in research and development - in particular with respect to (1) a sucessful transition into a carbon neutral alternative energy cycle of our society and (2) bioelectrochemical process energineering. Students will be able to devlop a fundamantal understanding of electrochemical surface processes, which will be the fundament for realizing and solving to-dates challanges in the following directions:

Fundamentals of electrochemistry (apparative issues and new developments, usage of electrochemical energy carriers in biologic and technologies systems)

Electrochemical and thermodynamic efficiency (from the lab scale to a broader impact: "cradle-to-consumer" efficiency vs biologic efficiency)

Bioelectrochemical processes and technologies (electrochemical technology in biosensing, photosynthesis and electrochemical solarcells, bioelectrochemical signal and energy transduction)

Electrochemical technology for energy conversion (Hydrogen based technology batteries, fuel-cells, electrolysis, CO2 reduction and technologic/economic impact)

Corrosion and corrosion protection in biologisch and technologic systems

Determination of technological readiness level of electrochemical technologies (assessment of research domains)

Understanding and rationalisation of the CO2-imapct of electrochemical technologies with respect to e-mobility and centralized vs decentralized grid solutions

Subject of course

Technology: Electrochemical energy carriers/conversions and efficiencies (hydrogen based technology, batteries, fuel cells, CO2 reduction, fuel cells, electrochemical solar cells and photosynthesis, electrolysis). Applications and potential for a transition to green and renewable energies.

Fundamentals: Description of the metal-electrolyte interface, atomic/molecular structure, redox processes: adsorption/desorption kinetics, phase equilibria and transitions, molecular self-organisation, film growth, classical and modern experimental methods.

Teaching methods

Teaching will be a mixture of input and discussion on the basis of recent scientifc discoveries and publications. Scientific publications will be available online for self-studies, and will be discussed in the lectures individually.
