After successful completion of the course, students are able to critically evaluate the suitability of materials characterization techniques for various applications in fundamental and applied research.
Overview of contemporary methods for sample characterization using physics-based techniques. The emphasis is on methods available at the TU Wien. The lecturers strive for a balanced presentation of methods, their underlying physical phenomena, and relevant applications.
Course Material is offered via the TUWEL.
Lecture with digital presentations of the physics behind the various techniques and their technical implementation. They are supplemented with blackboard drawings to describe various processes. Instrumentation, or parts of instrumentation, are shown in class to exemplify the technical realization.
Successful completion of a written test. Questions probe the understanding of the workings of various methods, the underlying physical principles as well as their strengths, weaknesses, and applicability.
If permitted by TU Wien policies, tests will take place in person.
(If this is not possible, tests will be given remotely via TUWEL.)
