Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to

  • Describe lattice vibrations of a solid via phonons
  • Interpret a phonon band structure, and the role of anharmonic corrections
  • Explain the symmetries of a solid and their connection to the properties of the solid
  • Explain the electronic structure of a solid and its relation to the properties of the solid

Teaching methods

During the lecture the definitions and methods are motivated, explained and illustrated with the help of case studies. Online-tools should be used supplementary.
