Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to comprehend the motivation and physical background of the proposed experimental tasks and to draw conclusions from the experimental results, as well as to actively handle the relevant physical equipment.

Subject of course

Preparation of intermetallic samples of scientific interest, in particular of rare earth and transition metal compounds which are subsequently further investigated at the institute. RF melting of starting material in levitation under protective gas or vacuum. Single crystal growth in a 4-mirror floating zone furnace or in a Czochralski arc furnace.
