Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • judge the degree of normalization of data stored in tables;
  • to balance the pros and cons of system architectures which are suitable for GIS-applications;
  • name and describe the phases of a GIS-related software development project;
  • define different key figures suitable for project mangement;
  • describe the theoretical background and key features of web frameworks suitable for GIS implementation (e.g. Geoserver or Open-Layers Plugin).

Subject of course

All topics covered in this lecture are concerned with the theoretical and practical aspects of implementing a GIS. This includes (but is not neccessesarily restricted to):

  • essential system architectures (e.g. client-server);
  • data design and practice using suitable (object-relational) database management systems (e.g. PostgreSQL and PostGIS) as well as querying these databases;
  • essential knowledge about moden web-based technologies and frameworks suitable to implement GIS (e.g. Geoserver and Open Layers Plugin);
  • essential project management skills.
