After successful completion of the course, students are able to:
- perform a simple field classification of rock types,
- assign material properties, origin and conditions of formation (P/T or environmental) to a rock,
- read a geological map and to interpret it in three dimensions (draw a profile).
- structure and composition of the Earth, in particular of the lithospheric plates,
- plate tectonics as origin of rock formation,
- characterisation of the three main lithologies: magmatic, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks,
- weathering and erosion, soil, hydrogeological aspects of selected rocks,
- interpreting geological maps.
- The lecture is based on Power Point slides.
- Rock specimens are provided for direct observation.
- Reading of geological maps and drawing of a geological profile are discussed using a hands-on approach.
The examination deals with all discussed chapters. Questions have to be answered by writing keywords or by drawing diagrams.
Bonus points can be added for the individually drawn geological profile.
