Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to

  • describe the process view of operations in terms of inputs, processes, outputs, information flows, suppliers and customers
  • define an operations strategy and its linkage to corporate strategy and market analysis
  • identify competitive priorities used in operations strategy
  • explain how decision theory can be used to make decisions under uncertainty or risk and describe how to draw and analyze a decision tree
  • discuss the process structure in services and manufacturing
  • discuss major process strategy decisions and discuss how to document and evaluate processes
  • sketch the four major costs of quality
  • explain the basic principles of Total Quality Management (TQM) and describe International Quality Documentation Standards
  • define long-term capacity, sketch investment analysis and explain Theory of Contraints (ToC)
  • describe how lean systems can facilitate the continuous improvement of processes
  • identify the nature of supply chains and the role of inventory; work with replenishment models
  • Advanced planning and Scheduling (APS) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)

The students realize explanatory, illustrative and in-depth examples partly under guidance and partly independently; the preparation of the examples together with TUWEL online tests on the basic contents of the VU forms the basis of the assessment.
