Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to give an insight into the historical development of central concepts in mathematics, especially by recognizing the difficulties which lead to more precise definitions.

1    Egypts and Babylonians

2    Greek Antiquity

3    History of algebra

4    History of infinitesimal calculus

5    Development of the function concept

6    A short history of probability

7    Contemporary mathematics: unsolved and recently solved mathematical problems

8    History of mathematics in Austria and famous Austrian mathematicians

Teaching methods

Lecture including discussion. A script (in German) exists which covers the whole lecture.

Oral exam: all questions will be published together with the script in the web. The student will draw three questions by chance at the beginning of the oral exam. So no question is surprising, every question resp. answer can be prepared.
