Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • to use logical connectives and quantifiers correctly,
  • to determine the convergence and possibly the limit of a sequence of reals, in particular of a real series, or of a power series,
  • to determine continuity and differentiability of real functions in one variable, and to determine the derivative of such a function
  • to develop real functions into their Taylor series and to understand the relationship between these objects,
  • to correctly interpret the integral of a real function, and to determine it in simple cases.

Subject of course

Fundamental terms and logic, sequences and series, continuous functions, differential and integral calculus.

Additional information

Registration

Sign up for one of the groups in TISS to take part in the exercises. This is possible between Tuesday, March 2nd 2021 at 10 a.m. and Monday, March 9th, 2020 at 6 p.m.

All evaluation criteria of the exercises will be held online.

The first exercise sheet will be made availabe here in TISS and is the same for all groups. The rest of the exercise is administered via the TUWEL platform, see e-learning course, no separate registration is necessary.

Competence check

You should complete the electronic competence check in the TUWEL by May 15th, 2021. This contributes 4 points to the total number of points. You can do the competence check as often as you like, the best result counts.

Organisation

For each of the ten classes eight exercises have to be prepared. The excercise will be announced about a week prior via TUWEL.

Videos with sample solutions will be published on Tuesdays at 12 a.m. A weekly short test will be held on Wednesdays from 4 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. This means you have about a day time to familiarize yourself with the sample solution at a time that is appropriate to you.

The first lecture starts in the week from 22nd to 26th March 2021. This is later than usual, but we want to ensure that we don't overtake the lecture.

• 1st exercise: 24 March 2021
• 2nd exercise: 14. April 2021
• 3rd exercise: 21. April 2021
• 4th exercise: 28. April 2021
• 5th exercise: 5. May 2021
• First interim test: 12. May, 2021
• 6th exercise: 19. May 2021
• 7th exercise: 26. May 2021
• 8th exercise: 2. June 2021
• 9th exercise: 9. June 2021
• 10th exercise: 16. June 2021
• Second interim test: 23. June, 2021

Before each of the two practice tests, a trial test is provided in TUWEL and a Q&A will be held via Zoom

Short test

There will be five short test before the first interim test which each can give up to 3 points. The four best results of these tests will be counted. Also five short tests will be held after the first interim test which each can give up to 4 points. Again, only the four best results of the tests will be counted.

Interim Tests

There will be two interim tests. Each of these test will take an hour and will be held online. More details about the modalities can be found on TUWEL. Each test can provide up to 34 points.

If you withdraw from the course before the first interim test, you won't get a grade - also no negative one.

Office Hours and Questions

For questions regarding the learing material you can find a link to Q&A forum on TUWEL. If you have personal questions you can qrite an email to the lecturers.

Examination modalities

The competence check attributes up to 4 points. Up to 34 points can be scored in every intermediate test. Three points are being awarded in each of the five short tests before the first intermediate test. The 4 best short tests are being rated, the worst one is discarded. In the five short tests after the first intermediate test, four points are awarded and the four best results are again rated.

Hence, the grading is constituted from the interim and short tests in the following way:

  • 4 points - Competence check
  • 12 points - Short tests before the first interim test
  • 34 points - 1st interim test
  • 16 points - Short tests after the first interim test
  • 34 points - 2nd interim test
