Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to carry out a study of literature concerning a complex mathematical question, to work out the work the results of the study, provide a lecture and discuss the results with the participants of the seminar.  Seminar work shall be documented.

Subject of course

This semester, in this seminar, we focus on numerical linear algebra both from a theoretical and implementational aspect.

Possible topics are:

  • High performace computing (HPC) in numerical linear algebra
  • Krylov-space methods for iterative solution of (symmetric) positive definite systems
    • CG-method (idea and convergence)
    • GMRES-method (convergence description with pseudospectra)
  • Iterative methods for saddle-point problems (Uzawa-Algorithm)
  • Numerical methods for eigenvalue problems
    • Lanczos-method
    • Singular value decomposition
