Learning-outcome description of the courses Technical Russian I (beginners, winter semester) and Technical Russian II (advanced students, summer semester)

Learning Outcomes:

This soft-skill course is aimed at students wishing to learn/deepen/improve their command and understanding of the Russian technical and scientific terminology. Its numerous attendees have differing knowledge levels of Russian ranging from absolute beginners to native speakers. In order to ensure fair and equal learning conditions for them all, including linguistically less talented students, they are herewith notified by the lecturer what work they have to expect and what steps they have to take on their way to gain a course work certificate laid down in a catalogue of performance requirements.

Meeting these requirements is the prerequisite for the successful completion of this course. Students gain valuable language skills:  Together with the acquisition of a basic technical and scientific Russian vocabulary they get better insight into how their own language “ticks”. At the same time, it enables them to acquire not only more social and intercultural competence. They also gain cognitive and practical proficiency through an improved understanding of language-based differences in facial expressions and body language, by exploring varying perceptions of figures of speech and arriving at some mutual understanding of differing world views. What they have learned – provided they show persistent interest and diligence – can be put to immediate use in practical communication in Russian.

Learning Activities:

The teaching format is a mix of presenting the learning material, dialogues and ad-hoc small-group work. Through learning materials in electronic form accessible to students enrolled in the course (appearing in the attendance list), listening to presentations prepared and delivered in Russian by co-students, participants get acquainted with the specific terminology of different subject areas. Regular homework assignments help to let vocabulary and grammar sink in.  

Basic knowledge of Russian and/or attendence of Tecnical Russian I are necessary, please no beginners in the summer semester.
